Illayaraja in Durham, NC

May 19th, 2004

The great musician Illayaraja needs no introduction to most south Indians. If you grew up in Tamilnadu, Andra pradesh, Kerala or Karnataka, its impossible for you not be a fan of Illayaraja's music.

The virtuoso was in the US (May 2004) on a short trip, trying to raise funds for a very interesting musical project. The project attempts to set verses from the Tamil spiritual literature 'Thiruvasakam', in symphonic form. Thiruvasakam is a collection of divinely inspired songs, composed in the seventh century by the great South Indian saint and poet Manickavasagar (one of the four major saivite saints, the other three being Appar, Sambandar and Sundaramurthi) .

Tamil association of North Carolina along with Telugu and Kanada associations of the region managed to get him to Durham. Being a fan, I volunteered to be the photographer for the event. Here are some pictures and video clips from the program.
